Website Design Reviews – we recently landed a new client and I asked our primary point of contact, ‘why did you call Digital Sales’?

The answer was an endorsement to social proofing and the power of real testimonials.  The answer was simple, the then prospect checked out our reviews on Google My Business (GMB).  So yes, five star ‘Reviews’ are great to build confidence and trust.  However, there are other important reasons to make sure your Google My Business account has very good reviews and is populated with content, yes, you guessed it….SEO.

So, what about GMB reviews and the effect they may have on your SEO performance, more so, Local SEO.

  • GMB is owned by Google, so, don’t ignore it if Google has a strong market share in your jurisdiction
  • Google+ is no more, so we believe Google will or already has transferred the SEO weight from Google+ to Google My Business.  With this in mind, GMB is extremely important and will grow in importance
  • Your reviews will also help your position on Google maps, see an example below for ‘Window Repair Dublin’ – see the second result with 46 reviews (please note, this company only has one matching keyword in its company name: Dublin, the other two have all three) and every review includes a response:

  • Just like ‘backlinks’ which are seen as ‘endorsements’, reviews are most likely considered with similar SEO weight
  • The words used in the review can also influence the search results, so don’t just ask for a five-star review, but also leave a comment and try and ask your clients to include certain keywords and if your business is location based, get locations into the reviews. See:

  • The Google Question and Answers section on GMB – as administrators ask your own questions and answer them to include keywords.  Check out the Questions and Answers within the Digital Sales profile (no harm in including some links back to your website)

  • Engagements – be sure to engage with your reviews and also your questions and answers on GMB – Google tracks social media shares, comments, likes, etc.  So, you can be sure they track your engagement one of their own platforms. See the engagement below:
